May 2011 Newsletter - What is IV Nutrient Therapy by Dr. Hynote.

Intravenous (IV) nutrient therapy has been prescribed for decades for people with a wide range of chronic and acute illness such as diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, heart disease, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, and viral illnesses among various other conditions.

Due to aging or illness, the body is not always able to effectively absorb required nutrients when taken orally. IV nutrient therapy is a way of getting vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other vital nutrients into the bloodstream quickly without relying on the digestive tract for absorption. This is an excellent option for people with digestive issues or those whom cannot tolerate oral supplementation. Additionally, those currently experiencing symptoms of disease are generally already highly deficient in certain nutrients making oral supplementation an ineffective and inefficient route of administration.

Utilizing intravenous administration allows for immediate therapeutic concentrations of nutrients to support the tissues that need it the most. This leads to a rapid increase of nutrients that are pushed into the center of cells to support important metabolic functions. This influx of nutrients provides a 'jump-start' to the cells metabolism providing increased energy for proper function and most importantly eliminating accumulated toxins. When cells are able to do this, symptoms of disease and illness decrease and people feel better.

IV nutrient therapy can be used for those suffering with chronic illness to help alleviate symptoms, support immune function, regulate mood and sleep, and provide an increase in overall energy and feeling of wellbeing. It's also an excellent option to maintain health and ward off common contagious illness like viral colds and flu. For example, high concentrations of vitamin C given intravenously actually kills viruses and can prevent the onset of colds and flu or help people recover quicker once symptoms begin. This is also true for other viruses like herpes simplex that causes cold sores.

IV nutrient therapy is a quick and effective way to promote health. Depending on your health history, symptoms, and health goals, a personalized plan of care including specific nutrients and frequency/quantity of infusions will be constructed to fit each person's needs. Phoenix Wellcare offers the following IV nutrient therapies:

Myers cocktail : a mix of B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, and trace minerals. Excellent for increasing overall energy, alleviating migraine headaches, chronic fatigue, viral illness, asthma exacerbations, supporting athletic performance and recovery. This mixture is administered over 10-15 minutes and is great for people in a time crunch or who need a quick boost of energy.

Vitamin C: a specific high dose of vitamin C is selected according to your health needs and mixed with b-vitamins, magnesium, calcium, and other trace minerals. The components are similar to a traditional Meyers cocktail, except dosing is higher and the infusion runs over 30-60 minutes. These infusions are also helpful for chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, viral illness, wound healing, collagen production (good-bye wrinkles!) increased energy, and used as an adjunctive therapy in cancer treatment.

Vitamin C: "energy cocktail": the same as regular vitamin C infusion but with added amino acids like tyrosine, d-ribose, and NADH which are excellent for overall energy production and endurance especially in chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. Tyrosine is also especially helpful for sexual health.

Amino Acids: essential and non-essential amino acids are the building block to proteins and required for almost every cellular interaction and function in the body. Most gastrointestinal conditions result in an amino acid deficiency so for those with IBS, Crohn's/ulcerative colitis, and food allergies will greatly benefit from amino acid infusion as will people with symptoms of mild to moderate depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Also great for hair, skin, and nails.

Lipoic Acid: a strong antioxidant with too many benefits to list. Helps with liver detoxification, memory and brain health, nerve damage such as peripheral neuropathy, lowering blood sugar, reducing atherosclerotic plaque buildup in blood vessels, and helping the liver produce glutathione.

Glutathione: referred to as the ultimate antioxidant. Glutathione is made in the liver and required for nearly every detoxification process in the body. Helps detoxify heavy metals and carcinogens (cancer causing compounds). Has strong anti-aging properties which helps prevent degenerative disease and also slows the appearance of aging externally. Glutathione is notoriously known for it's poor oral absorption and best given IV. We also use glutathione to reduce chemotherapy side effects in people undergoing cancer treatment.

Phoenix Wellcare also offers specific IV protocols to support patients with Lyme Disease. Contact us at (707) 255-4172 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
