March 2011 Newsletter - Nutrient of the month: CURCUMIN PHYTOSOME by Dr. Hynote. What is Curcumin? Curcumin (Curcuma longa) is the antioxidant compound of the spice Turmeric, and is used in curries and other spicy dishes from India, Asia. Curcumin is what gives the Curry its characteristic bright yellow color and strong taste. Curry can be too spicy for some people, but you can still obtain the benefits of Curcumin by taking it as a nutritional supplement in convenient capsule form. Like many herbal remedies, people first used Curcumin as a food and later discovered that it also had impressive medicinal qualities. Over the centuries, this spice has been used as a pain relieving, anti-inflammatory agent to relieve pain and inflammation in the skin and muscles. It has served as a treatment for the liver, menstrual difficulties, hematuria, hemorrhage, colic, and flatulence. In modern times, research has focused on Curcumin's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, and antimicrobial properties, and on its use in cardiovascular disease, and gastrointestinal disorders. The food we eat has a direct effect on our health, even if that food is something as seemingly insignificant as a spice. Several studies have shown Curcumin’s effectiveness in all of these areas of health. Whether taken as a supplement or from food, Curcumin is generally poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. That is why most Curcumin supplements are high doses and on the more costly end of the spectrum. Meriva-SR is a unique, patented time release Curcumin product with phytosome technology. Now available through Phoenix Wellcare, exclusively form Thorne Research in conjunction with Indena S.p.A., the worldwide experts in botanical extract technology. Phytosomes are plant extracts bound to phosphatydlcholine (PC), an essential component of human cells. This phytosome complex easily crosses the gut barrier, unlike common herbal extracts, and results in significantly higher blood levels and is better absorbed than other standardized 95% Curcumin extracts.
